Debugging Functions

The reference pages in this section describe functions for debugging.

Many operating systems support an inter-machine debugging capability that uses a physical connection between the operating systems for communication between the operating system that hosts the debugger and the operating system that is the target. The most common connection used is an interconnection of serial COM ports, though a connection via an IEEE 1394 cable is common as well. The ports are then used exclusively for debugging traffic.

When more than one guest can be debugged in this manner simultaneously, each partition's traffic must be multiplexed across the common physical connection. The hypervisor provides debugging functions to exchange session-related data across the physical connection. The default port that is used for the connection is the serial COM port.

For more information about the hypervisor's support of debugging, see Guest Debugging Support.
