The value returned by the IA32_PLATFORM_ID MSR (0x17) can be used in conjunction with the family, model, and stepping information as reported by the CPUID instruction. The hypervisor is consistent in the way that it handles the IA32_PLATFORM_ID MSR and will expose the true content of the IA32_PLATFORM_ID MSR only to the root partition. The hypervisor will present all other partitions with the value that the hypervisor obtained from the logical processor that possesses the minimum family, model, and stepping value.
